Learning Object Standards

Why compliance…

  • Future compatibility
  • Longer lifetime of materials
  • Smoother migration as platforms evolve (don't get stuck on dead-end platform)
  • Easier to locate, access, archive, and reuse
  • Contribute to critical mass benefiting education in general
  • Expand audience, maybe get paid
  • Compatibility with learning management systems for enhanced functionality

While the concept of learning objects is a significant advance in the creation of educational materials, it is not enough. To fully realize the possibility of personalized and reusable educational content requires the establishment of standards for the design and description of learning objects. The substantial potential benefits — reusability, interoperability, durability, accessibility — can only be realized if there is widespread adherence to the appropriate standards. Without such standards, the value of learning objects is substantially reduced.

Over the last few years, the Advanced Distributed Learning initiative has made rapid progress through incorporating the efforts of IMS*, AICC*, ARIADNE*, and the IEEE* Learning Technology Standards Committee into a single harmonized reference model for learning design and delivery, the Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM).

*IMS = Instructional Managment Systems Project; AICC = Aviation Industry CBT (Computer Based Training) Committee; ARIADNE = Alliance of Remote Instructional Authoring and Distribution Networks for Europe; IEEE = Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers Learning Technology Standards Committee.
