What is a learning object?

An official definition has yet to be coined, but there are many different perspectives as to how one is defined...

Learning objects are self-standing, reusable, discrete piece of content that meets an instructional objective. Learning objects may be tagged with meta-data so that users can easily identify and locate specific learning objects in a Web-based environment.
