Why Learning Objects?

Why use learning objects?

  • No need to reinvent the wheel
  • Do more...extend your reach
  • Top quality materials with less effort
  • Clear copyright status
  • Assemble custom courses

Imagine this...

In a simple example, suppose you have the following (hypothetical) facts:

Course Designer/Developer Cost = $100/hr.
Course Development Time = 100 development hrs./1 course hr.
Total Development Cost = $100/hr x 100 hr. = $10,000/1 course hr.

If a previously created learning object took 10 hours to create and subsequently could be reused to save time in the rough course development above, we can estimate the following:

$100/hr. x 10 hr. = $1000 saved in course development
or
Total Development Cost = $100/hr. x 90 hr. = $9000/1 course hr.

Ultimately the cost of the learning object's development would be spread out over all the courses in which it was used, but the idea is still the same. If a learning object is designed to be reusable, the value of that object increases through the time saved in course development.

Given these dynamics, more time could be spent in developing potentially higher quality learning content, with the notion that through its reuse, it will increase in value.
